There comes a moment in May, sometimes earlier, when the idea of summer and hits and becomes fully enticing. The days get warmer, the sun beats down harder, and the music is louder as anticipation of something great sets in. Summer is special, especially for students, as it is a long break from days of routine where one can squeeze as much joy out of life without anything else getting in the way.
Summer music is always special to me for this very reason. Listening to songs that I jammed to in summers past always brings back warm and fuzzy nostalgic memories that leave me smiling and laughing. I’ve already started on my Summer 2019 playlist, so I thought why not share this with you?! Are you ready for some dance-worthy, windows rolled down type of music? Keep reading!
“Midnight City” by M83
Favorite Lyrics: The city is my church / It wraps me in the sparkling twilight
Of course, I have to start my summer playlist post with the summer song of all summer songs: “Midnight City”. From the party chords at the beginning to the wild and wacky dance rhythms, this song is the biggest must-have for any summer playlist. If you don’t like it, it’s guaranteed that someone you’re with will.
“Kids” by MGMT
Favorite Lyrics: The water is warm / But it’s sending me shivers
“Kids” is the type of song that makes you turn the volume all the way up so that it drowns out everything but dancing. I can just imagine one of those summer scenes in coming of age movies where the characters are driving down a road at night with all their windows down as they sing at the top of their lungs. Cheesy? Maybe. Worth a listen? Definitely.
“Wait by the River” by Lord Huron
Favorite Lyrics: And the stars fill the river / As it flows into the sky / And the mind leaves the body / And floats higher and higher
Contrary to popular belief, summer has its down times where songs like “Wait by the River” come in handy. Lord Huron is the physical and emotional embodiment of summer, so any song by him goes with this upcoming season. However, “Wait by the River” has a special je ne sais quoi that makes it the perfect song to sway to on the come down from a fun summer night.
“First” by Cold War Kids
Favorite Lyrics: On the front lawn, sprinklers turn on / It’s not your house, where’d you go wrong?
As soon as the first notes of “First” hit, I can feel the song in my soul. The simple beat creates an easy rhythm to move to while the singing washes over you. There’s something bittersweet to this song that makes you appreciate the moment you’re in and realize there’s no place like the now.
“Gilded Lily” by Cults
Favorite Lyrics: But I know you’ll take me with you / We’ll live in spaces between walls
“Gilded Lily” is another song perfect for the come down of a summer high and would be beautiful on beach walks and stargazing alike. Be sure to close your eyes when listening to this one, it creates an experience like no other.
“Dancing on Glass” by St. Lucia
Favorite Lyrics: How long ’til we find / The devil inside of us / How high is too low
“Dancing on Glass” has a classic summer beat that never gets old, no matter how many times you play it. Whether it’s a solo dance party of one or a dance party to end all dance parties, this song is the one. Even just listening to it as I write this is making me dance in my chair!
“Sun Was High (So Was I)” by Small Black
Favorite Lyrics: I thought of you
Want to add a more retro feel to your summer playlist? Look no farther than “Sun Was High (So Was I)”. This song can blend in easily amongst playlists full of Rex Orange County and Tame Impala. It’s beautiful, sweet, and creates a peaceful space to just let go, which is essential in the summertime 🙂
“all the good girls go to hell” by Billie Eilish
Favorite Lyrics: Can’t commit to anything but a crime
This song is a little different than those in the rest of the post. “all the good girls go to hell” is a little heavier and great for someone who wants a song with bad b***h vibes. And if we’re being honest, we all have those moments in the mirror where we’re thinking “i’m a bad b***h, you can’t kill me!” (If you don’t get the reference, I’m sorry). Add this Billie song to your playlist for when you’re feeling yourself and ready to take on a night out!
“Tokyo” by White Lies
Favorite Lyrics: Oh, you’ve never looked good in blue / And I’m the sunset, I’m the view
Not gonna lie, the beginning of this song sounds like the Stranger Things theme song… but if that doesn’t mean it’s going to be good, I don’t know what does. “Tokyo” sounds like a song from the credits of the movie, in the best way possible. As soon as the chorus hits, you’ll be sold, 100% guarantee 🙂
That’s all for my Summer 2019 Playlist… so far 😉 I hope you all enjoyed this post and found some new songs to jam out to this summer. Leave a comment below with your favorite summer song and feel free to drop any blog post ideas while you’re down there. Thanks so much for reading and happy almost summer!
