Before I address anything else that’s been going on in my life, I want to talk about the most exciting thing that’s happened to me recently… I’M PUBLISHED!! IN A MAGAZINE!! If you follow my Instagram (@absolutelyolivia) you may have seen me posting frantic stories in January about my fear of failure in reference to writing the articles for this magazine. I was terrified they would be less than perfect and not as good as the magazine’s editors were hoping for. Although they didn’t turn out perfect (because nothing ever does), with your sweet messages of encouragement and a push from myself, I finished and submitted two articles.
Now, the two articles along with photo sets I created are featured in Retrograde, Issue 2.1! The issue’s theme is Coming of Age and is a vibrant, nostalgic, and vulnerable take on this modern generation. A slew of other talented creators also contributed, so be sure to get yourself a copy! Something I’ve never mentioned on the blog is Faces of Feminism, the feminist media site I co-founded with Callan from @currentcalllan. We launched the site in January after a few months of work on it and were surprised by how quickly it took off!
On Faces of Feminism, we feature people who identify as feminists with all different backgrounds and stories. Our front page is filled with faces and blurbs from these feminists, while our other pages contain interviews with prominent feminists, articles on current women’s rights events, and resources for your own donations and education.
Callan and I are beyond proud of how this site is growing, and we are learning new things about intersectional feminism everyday because of it, which is such a bonus. WHY I WAS GONE
Now it’s time for me to talk about why I took a small, yet somewhat unintentional break from the blog.
Starting at the end of February/early March negative mental health symptoms, like those I experienced last October started creeping up on me again. My sleep schedule became wacky and my motivation plummeted as did my positive mindset. I stopped posting on my Instagram as much and the blog fell to the wayside. I don’t want to go into detail at this point in time, but eventually, there did come a point where I would come home everyday and do nothing until it was time to go to bed that night.
I realized I needed to pinpoint the stressors and enablers in my life that were keeping me in such a toxic head space. It was difficult to do so, but once I did, I began to work towards a solution and a better mentality. I was lucky to be able to realize that I was falling into the same hole that I had been in throughout October and was able to reel myself back in sooner rather than later.
Although I’m not entirely sure what exactly triggered this, I have a good enough idea to not let it happen again. Just know that if you’re going through something similar, never hesitate to reach out to me through email or Instagram DMs! I may not have the answers to your problems, but I’m always down to chat 🙂
GETTING BACK ON TRACK
As soon as I began to feel my mindset shifting back to its original happy-go-lucky Olivia, I knew it was time to get my grades and blog back on track. My first way of doing this is to create a master to-do list for the next few weeks and I also wrote out the next month’s blog posts with dates (get a deeper look into how I plan for blog posts HERE). Then, for each upcoming day I wrote a smaller to-do list with homework, photos, Instagram posts, etc. all listed out.
A big part of getting back on track for me is to re-find my motivation and organization is a huge helper in this. It eliminates my tendency to procrastinate and makes tasks seem less daunting since they are broken down day-by-day.
The last thing I did and am still doing is to remind myself it’s okay to not be okay, and better days are always ahead. If something does not go as planned or sends me back into a small downward spiral, I take a breather and re-center myself. I understand better now what some of my triggers are and I am able to identify them before they happen.
Now that my energy and mental health has been restored (this is always a journey so every day it’s changing still), I plan to go back to my original blog posting schedule of twice a week on Wednesdays and Sundays. Also, I am posting Instagram posts every other day.
I’m excited to delve into video content in the future, as I took the leap into using iMovie earlier this month for a brand collaboration!
