How do you balance being a full-time student and being a blogger?
This is a question I get asked at least once a week, whether it’s through Instagram DMs or in real life. Truth is, it is far from glamorous and involves a lot of sitting on my bed for hours… a lot. Even though I manage everything well and do get the majority of my to-dos done with time to spare, it does get hard (hence why I only posted once a week last November instead of twice). Previously, I have attempted to write advice posts on how to balance it all, but truth is, some days I’m not even sure how I do it myself. So, instead of giving tips, today I’m sharing my after-school routine, in hopes that it will give you all the insight you need to balance everything you have on your own plate.
Although this isn’t my everyday routine, it is a good glimpse at what 3-4 weekdays for me always look like. Let’s get into it!
3:30- I arrive at home, throw on some extra accessories, and head out the door to shoot a look with my mom. Yes, my mom takes the majority of my photos and yes, she is amazing; I try to remember to tell her such on the daily 😉 Oh, and I can’t forget the amazing yogurt protein shake that I grabbed on my way out the door!
4:00- I return to my house after the shoot and immediately get the photos off of my camera and onto my iPad to edit. Lately, I’ve been using a combination of the Tezza app and VSCO to edit all my photos. While editing, I always catch up on my YouTube subscriptions to add a bit of fun to the process.
4:40- After editing and watching YouTube, I begin my homework for AP World. It’s a graphic organizer, so doesn’t take me nearly as long as other assignments we occasionally get, which is a blessing on days when I’m trying to be as productive as possible.
5:15- This is about the time of night when I change into comfier clothing like sweats and a t-shirt. I start on my AP Physics homework and put my phone out-of-sight for the 2 hours I have decided to block out for phone-free work every night. 6:30- Physics takes up a good chunk of time and a lot of brain power, but after a quick break it’s on to responding to blog emails and DMs. I do my best to check and respond to my emails and DMs daily, so this night was no different. Although this is the more boring business side of blogging, it sets my soul on fire being able to connect with brands and you all to build lasting connections and relationships!
7:00- Instagram stories are a vital part of my brand as a whole and making sure I update them as many times a day as possible is key for me. Around this time of night (sometimes later) is when I typically get on Instagram and post talking stories or share important photos, screenshots, and posts from that day. Then, it’s time to eat dinner and have my nightly catch-up chat with my sister 🙂
7:45- I begin to work on my next blog post… this one! Towards the end of 2018, I fell into a bad habit of writing blog posts the night before or the day of, so I am being extra proactive and aware of my time this year. This can be difficult for me as I am very much a seat-of-the-pants-pressure-is-on type of writer, but it has proved less stressful and helpful in the long run.
8:30- As some of you may know, I recently launched a website with my girl, Callan, called Faces of Feminism. On the site, we strive to show our viewers that anyone and everyone can be a feminist. As part of this, we showcase photos of people who identify as feminists and post articles to help you stay informed on current global events. I spent an hour brainstorming for the site and reaching out to fellow feminists on Instagram to feature on the site. Faces of Feminism is an exciting new area of concentration in my life and finding time for it is taking a lot of reevaluating, but you know what they say: if you truly want something in your life, you’ll make time for it!
9:30- I head into my bed, but my night is far from over. As per usual, I sort through all my recently taken photos and export them to Planoly, an Instagram planning app. Here, I can preview my feed with posts I haven’t posted yet, and switch the photos around until I like how they all fit together. I schedule the photos for the upcoming days and write captions for two posts out. This is an easy way for me to get a good look at the days ahead, set reminders for Instagram posts, and figure out when I need to shoot new looks.
10:15- Time to respond to blog comments! I do this about once a week. Seeing what you all have to say about my posts always makes me heart the absolute happiest. I especially loved reading all the longer comments on my most recent post, Why You’re NOT Unattractive. They really let me connect to you all and get to know you better than before.
10:40- Even though I need to work on an article for a magazine due this weekend, my eyes are slowly getting heavier. It is time to officially wind down with some light reading before going to sleep for good. My nights don’t always end as early as this one, but I was able to be productive during the day which my sleep schedule always thanks me for 😉
